Chelsea v Liverpool: UEFA Super Cup. Live at The New Oxford 12 noon Weds Aug 14th

Liverpool v Chelsea Super Cup

Hi CFC fans,
A great turn-out at the pub on Sunday … I think we all agreed that it was a strange result given that for much, maybe even most of the match we were the better team. Mistakes and vulnerability to counter-attacks were our obvious weaknesses. I’m sure Frank has the personnel and personality to solve both. It is not going to be a dull season for sure.

A CFC Vancouver Fan's view: Thanks to Angus Wakefield for this view of the Man U match.

In what became a tough game to watch for Chelsea fans, there were some positive signs that we need to take forward as we give Super Frank the the time he requires and deserves. This won’t be an ordinary season for The Blues and, as Gerry quite rightly pointed out, patience will be the key to his success.

Frank’s inclusion of both Mount and Abraham in the starting line up may have raised a few eyebrows (including those of Jose Mourinho), but given the options available to Lampard this season, it seems shrewd to involve the younger players from the off. Abraham displayed the attacking prowess that served him so well last season in the Championship when he rattled a shot off the post in the opening period of the game, and made some positive contributions throughout his 90 minute appearance. Similarly, Mount showed signs of pace and energy that made him a favourite of Lampard’s during their time at Derby, and if he can find some more composure in the final third, then he will be a real threat going forward.

The decision to sell Luiz to rivals Arsenal on deadline day seems a risky one, given the fragilities displayed when playing out from the back throughout the game. With Christensen only recently reintroduced into the first team and Zouma making his return after a number of seasons on loan, our defence was understandably fragile. With Alonso waiting in the wings, and Rudiger on his way back from injury, hopefully we can iron out these issues and show more of the dominance and positivity that was evident in our first half display.

The 20 minute cameo of Kante was an encouraging sign given his recent injury spell, and he seemed to be back to his workmanlike self- tracking back well to cover our defence and making some important blocks in the process. Barkely seemed to carry on his impressive pre-season form and was perhaps unlucky to be substituted with 30 minutes left to play, but it was important to give Pulisic some Premier League minutes and he will definitely be given better opportunities to properly introduce himself in the coming games. With our youthful exuberance, key players returning from injury and Frank’s’ winning mentality, let’s take this positivity into our first home game of the season against Leicester on Sunday 18th.
